A few must haves for new pups or old dogs!

We’ve learned a few things along the way and wanted to share with you a few of our favorite things and must haves.  Regardless of if you’re trying to decide the things you need to have to get ready for a new pup or something for your seasoned hunting dog, we have a few recommendations for you!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!

Puppy Crates and Dog Beds

As hard as it is when you first bring your puppy home, it needs to spend a good deal of time in its crate.  This will help with house breaking and helping the pup feel comfortable in its own space.  The smaller the better when it comes to the little ones.  You don’t want them to have a great deal of room to move around in or they will begin to use the extra space as a bathroom.  Do yourself a favor and go with one of these small crates.  It was light, easily portable, and the perfect size for a GSP puppy!

Dogs Love to EAT!

When it comes to dog food we stick with the same thing from the very beginning.  You want to ensure that your German Shorthaired Pointer pup has plenty of time to grow and develop properly.  One way you can do this is through his or her food.  GSPs need slow, sustained growth to help prevent orthopedic problems, such as hip dysplasia. Keeping this in mind we only feed with Purina Pro-Plan Sport 30/20 for all life stages.  When you pick your puppy up, they will have been on this since being weened.  We STRONGLY recommend sticking with it!

Work Them Hard Treat Them Well!

If you ask “the girls”, the most important thing you can keep in the house for the pups is a good stockpile of treats.  As a way to help with positive training and rewarding, we do keep a fair amount and variety of treats around for the pups.  We recommend to try a few and see which works best for you.  These are a few that our pups love and our kids love to give them.

Who doesn’t love toys

If there is one thing that German Shorthaired Pointers love to do as much as hunt, it’s to play.  Playtime is a great way to burn off some energy, strengthen bonds, and truly enjoy your pup.  When it comes to playing with retrieving dogs, we recommend staying away from ropes or toys designed to play “tug-of-war” with, but there are countless others that will help you and your fur-baby let loose.
